Mandala Painting Project

The word "mandala" is from the classical Indian language of Sanskrit. Loosely translated to mean "circle," a mandala is far more than a simple shape. It represents wholeness, and can be seen as a model for the organizational structure of life itself--a cosmic diagram that reminds us of our relation to the infinite, the world that extends both beyond and within our bodies and minds.
Describing both material and non-material realities, the mandala appears in all aspects of life: the celestial circles we call earth, sun, and moon, as well as conceptual circles of friends, family, and community.

In terms of art, mandalas are excellent examples of radial balance, often using symmetry in the creation of pattern which is an introductory way to explore design. My students really outdid themselves in the design aspect of the mandalas. Using a choice of complementary color pairs, students created outstanding mandalas this term. Just see for yourself!

  1. The different sorts of colors, patterns and designs make the mandalas look like they are three dimensional.

  2. The repetition of patterns in every single one of these is fantastic, but out of all of them I must say that Caitlin O'Leery's Mandala is very eye catching to do the color contrast of the dark blueish rim and the lighter/brighter orange in the middle to create both a color contrast and what is possibly saturation contrast. The center star shape (use of shapes) is also very eye catching.

  3. The different colors and small designs on Nina LoGrande's mandala are very interesting to look at. By using contrasting colors, it makes the patterns really pop out.

I really like the intricate designs inside of the shapes. I think the artists did a great job choosing colors that complimented each other nicely. Personally Katie Russo's the best because of the way the darker colors brought out the brighter colors in her pattern

  5. Mandala paintings are so cool. I really like Nicole Burke's, I think the colors and patterns she used stand out and look really good together. I like how she only really used blue but yet it still looks very colorful and bright and she doesn't have as many designs and patterns as the others but it still is just as appealing. Nice job.
